In the Big Easy, gumbo goes meatless on Friday

In these northern environs, gumbo is a dish that many think of but once a year, as a marker of the pre-Lent celebration of Mardi Gras.

But down in New Orleans, where gumbo is the most important dish in the Louisiana lexicon, most restaurants serve some version of it year round - at least once a week.

At this time of year, two days post-Carnival, with strands of glittering beads, doubloons and plastic spears - parade throws all - already gathering dust, Lent has arrived in the largely Catholic city.

And the people must suffer with seafood gumbo.

For Friday is gumbo day in scores of New Orleans restaurants, and many comply with the Lenten restrictions, preparing it without meat.

One of NOLA's best gumbo haunts, Dunbar's Creole Cooking, flooded badly following Hurricane Katrina in August 2005 and has since relocated to the cafeteria space at Loyola University's law school.

Fred Thompson, missing and presumed dead in the real world, comes in third at 6 percent. The Websites for actual front-runners Giuliani, Romney, and McCain are barely above 4 percent, 3 percent, and 2 percent.

Why does the Republican second-tier have a Second Life on the 'net? We know it's not the writers. Perhaps, in Huckabee's case, it's the prelude to a genuine, real-world breakthrough. Or perhaps, in the face of grim political realities, escape is just more entertaining. ... 4:20 P.M. (link)

Special Favors: This week, Republican leaders officially gave up hope that Larry Craig will ever leave. A day after Craig passed Mr. Potato Head as the most popular Halloween costume in Idaho history, The Hill reported that the GOP has abandoned the last siege engine it had left against him, by agreeing to let the man keep his earmarks.

We’ve given birth — to an improved Web site

A kid-friendly calendar of events focused on family activities. (So you can stop hunting around for stuff to do with your kids!)

A kid-friendly restaurant database that only lists restaurants where kids are welcome.

A guide to 30-minute meals and a recipe database to help you get a healthy dinner on the table quickly when you get home from work.

A brand-new blog from food writer Jeanne Besser focused on balancing work, family and food. A mother of two, Jeanne writes among other things our 5:30 Challenges each week and will be talking about feeding your family in her new blog.

And just to stir things up, we have created a new space for DAD on the MOMania Web site. We have invented the DAD Vent. This can work both ways: Dads can come and vent or Moms can vent about Dads.

Tasty Comments on Bacon-Wrapped Dogs

I was incensed when I read Kate Coe's article "Tribes to Voters: How Dare You?" [Feb. 8-14]. You should be careful who you let freelance for your paper. The only things she got right were from my business card, which I gave her, and the AFL-CIO button I wear proudly.

The Aussies look follow a British proposal to force ISPs to terminate ...

That's why we have been pushing a proposal to internet service providers for a commonsense system of warning notices which, if unheeded, would ultimately result in a user having their account suspended or disconnected." ISPs are unhappy with the move. National Internet Industry Association chief executive Peter Corones plans on airing his constituents' complaints to Mr. Conroy later this week. Mr. Corones argues that current penalties are "stiff enough". In Australia downloading music can land you injunctions, damages and costs, fines of up to $60,500 for individuals and up to $302,500 for corporations per infringement and up to five years' jail -- nothing to sneeze at. Corones argues, "Internet service providers are not the enforcers of copyright." The statement is a sharp juxtaposition to ISP policies in the U.S.

Foods We Love: Dishes that make hearts go pitter-patter

My mother-in-law has been carrying on a love affair with butter for years.

She slathers it on warm, crusty bread and spreads it on sandwiches, knowing butter, like a bad boyfriend, will never change -- but loving it just the same.

We all seem to have a food or foods that we are passionate about. One that makes our heart go pitter-patter and our salivary glands work overtime at the mere mention.

Bon Appetit magazine takes an annual readers' survey about what foods they love and so in honor of Valentine's Day, the holiday of love, we decided to follow suit and take our own completely unscientific local survey of what foods people love.

Let's start with appetizers.

Several years ago many Bon Appetit readers admitted that their guilty pleasure was onion dip.

Because no one explores for uranium when you've got half a century's worth of it already found. The truth of the matter is uranium prospecting has barely begun, with most of the earth's surface not surveyed for uranium, and many low-yield mines shut down due to the 1980s plummet in uranium prices. The true amount of reserves we have are at least 15X higher. But for purposes of this calculation, lets just assume they're only 5X higher. That gives us 250 years. So where's the rest come from?Right now we burn uranium fuel once, then throw it away. In the 1970s we used to reprocess that fuel. Burned in a breeder reactor, it actually makes more fuel...a process that can be repeated up to 20 times. President Carter banned fuel reprocessing for proliferation concerns, and the industry has never recovered.
