Jim Coleman: How to stop that meringue from weeping

Q: For Valentine's Day, I am making my boyfriend's favorite dessert, lemon meringue pie. I have his family's recipe, and the last time I made it, I followed the recipe exactly. It looked great and tasted great, but there was one problem: The golden meringue pulled away from the edges of the pan, and underneath the meringue was very watery. Can you please send me another recipe and tell me how to prevent this mistake? Is there a way to fix the recipe I have?

- Lynn H.

A: You sound like such a great girlfriend. I'm so touched. Every time I look at your letter I can barely read it because of all the weeping . . .

No, it's not me weeping - all that sobbing is coming from your meringue. Weeping is the culinary term for what is going wrong with your meringue.

Lafayette's Gigi is uneven, but heading in the right direction

Gigi in Lafayette is a small restaurant that's developing a big reputation in Contra Costa County.

Jeffrey Amber, who was a Chronicle Rising Star in 2000 when he was the chef at XYZ restaurant in San Francisco's W Hotel (he then went on to become the executive chef of Chow restaurants), opened this small, charming bistro in July. He has used the same market-driven approach that has become a hallmark for chefs in San Francisco, a simple idea that has been met with resounding success. In fact, he calls his cuisine "Northern Californian," which translates into lots of salads, followed by sturdy main courses such as pork tenderloin with candied yams, cabbage, apples and farro ($19).

Amber took over a space that for a third of a century was Kaffee Barbara, with a roomy patio for lunch and warmer evenings.

Cancer's immortal archenemy: compassion

Rob and Leslie Killette grew up in South Tampa.

They root for the Bucs. They go to Gasparilla. They graduated from Plant High.

"We're never leaving," Rob said. "We'll be here forever."

They got married in 1992 and had two kids, Robby and Tyler Anne. Today, Rob, 40, is a sales manager for Sprint; Leslie, 37, is a prekindergarten teacher.

They're the couple who can't have a small cookout because they can't invite So-and-So without asking So-and-So, and on and on.

So when the sad news came, it quickly filtered through the community, into schools, churches, youth athletic leagues.

Just 10 years old, Robby Killette had cancer.

The fifth-grader was getting ready last fall for his day at Mabry Elementary School, where his mom also works, when she noticed that his left jaw was swollen.

Cleanup begins in Soutgate apartment fire

NORTH PARK

It's a comfy setting for a light breakfast, a cup of coffee, or soup and sandwiches.

Tall, arched windows bring lots of light into the two-level coffeehouse, where food is secondary to the relaxing atmosphere. You can pick from various pastries, quiches, and meat and vegetarian sandwiches that are served with fresh fruit and potato salad.

Housed in a 1920s Spanish Revival building, Claire de Lune no longer has wireless Internet access because "people were camping out," said an employee.

The breakfast bagel, with red onion, cheddar and egg, served with kiwi, grapes and melon, is a decent choice, as is the spinach quiche. Mimicking Starbucks' Frappuccino, Claire de Lune serves a frosty mocha; if you want it blended with a banana, ask for the Funky Monkey.
