Pyjamas turn fashionable

Most crawl in between the sheets wearing a T-shirt and shorts, which they combine either in line with their tastes or the whatever-is-nearest-at-hand principle. Classic men's pyjamas are passé.

Today's fashion designers have set out to make men rediscover pyjamas, however. Using light and skin-friendly fabrics, sophisticated styles and unusual patterns, they hope to reawaken men's nightwear from its slumber.

"It's sensational that something like this is happening to nightwear," enthused Alexandra von Richthofen, an expert in next-to-skin garments for the Frankfurt-based trade journal Textilwirtschaft (Textile Industry). Men, after all, are not exactly fashion hounds in bed.

Niels-Holger Wien, from the eastern German city of Halle, is among the fashion designers who feel that men's pyjamas nowadays need not be kept hidden under the covers.

Should shops charge a tax on plastic bags?

It will be good in a way because it will be convenient, but bad because of the lorries bringing fresh produce."

A Bromley Council spokesman said: "We have heard the rumours about the new Tesco.

"Tesco hasn't approached the council formally about planning permission for this site.

"But Tesco wouldn't require change of use permission because the site is already used for retail.

"Planning permission for signs and any alterations would be open to consultation in the usual way."

A Tesco spokesman said: "We are unable to comment on rumours about whether or not we are opening a new store.

"We are always looking at sites for stores and we have a policy of consulting the public first before we make any planning application.

Preheat oven to 215 degrees F. Line a baking sheet with parchment paper.

In a large bowl, use an electric mixer on medium speed to beat together egg whites, 1 teaspoon strawberry extract, and cream of tartar until frothy. With mixer running, add powdered sugar in tablespoon increments. Add food coloring and continuing beating until stiff peaks form, taking care not to overbeat.

Transfer mixture to a pastry bag or large zip-top plastic bag fitted with large round tip. Pipe into 2-inch spirals on prepared baking sheet. Bake in preheated oven for 45 minutes to 1 hour, rotating once. Turn off oven and open door. With meringues still inside oven, let dry out for 10 to 12 minutes. Remove parchment paper from baking sheet and let meringues cool completely.

Immigrant businesses tapping local market

PITTSFIELD — With 23 years of work behind him at the popular Manhattan Pizza restaurant in Great Barrington, Brazil native Hamilton Pereira has made two big moves in recent months.

Last July, he became an American citizen. In September, he opened a second Manhattan Pizza, in the Elm Street Plaza. This one is Manhattan Pizza and Brazilian Grill.

As a citizen, now, he can vote. As a citizen, he also can apply for a beer and wine license for his new restaurant, but those wheels are turning slowly at City Hall, he said. Until then, his restaurant patrons are welcome to bring their own libations.

Pereira, who still owns the Great Barrington restaurant with his former wife, also is turning out pizza, grinders, salads, traditional Italian entrées at both restaurants, with the added twist of Brazilian fare in the Pittsfield location.

Adult day care fills a niche

Area officials say the demand for them increased between 10 and 25 percent in the past year, depending on location.

Currently there are four adult day care centers in Horry County, three in Georgetown County and none in Brunswick County, N.C.

"There are so many people out there that need day care, but they don't know about us or understand," said Donna Vance, an owner of three adult day care facilities in Horry County.

According to NADSA, adult day care programs provide a variety of social and other related support services in a protective setting during any part of a day, but less than 24-hour care.

Adult centers generally operate programs during normal business hours five days a week. Some programs offer services in the evenings and on weekends.

Maynard: Where Were You 10/18

The joint had to be jumpin' after this one. Kentucky is regarded as a "basketball state" but that's only because football hasn't been nearly as successful. Kentucky fans love to win be it basketball or football or horseshoes. As the fans like to tell the coaches: We're with you, win or tie. Some were making the trek back home after a week at the beach or some other vacation destination. It was the end of fall break for most schools in the area. Many of those were either forced to call a friend for updates or maybe dial in on the radio, listening to Tom Leach call the game and hearing his trademark "TOUCHDOWN, KENTUCKY!" more times than they could have ever imagined.Another told me about being at a wedding reception downtown where there were no televisions. Luckily, the Ashland Plaza Hotel was nearby and its lobby did have TVs.

Ground shrimp chips the secret to crispy fried chicken

Just trust me and try this one.

If you like fried chicken with a perfectly extra-crunchy, savory breading that's not too thick, too thin or too greasy, and cooks in a flash, go to an Asian market and buy "prawn-flavored chips."

Sometimes called "shrimp chips," these snacks usually are sold in boxes (under a variety of brands) and prior to cooking resemble brightly colored hunks of plastic.

The traditional way of preparing shrimp chips is to submerge them in very hot oil until they puff up and expand, turning into an oddly colored but delicious cross between a potato chip and a cheese puff.

On a whim, I tossed a bunch of the uncooked chips in a blender and pulverized them. I then dredged thin chicken breast halves through the ground chips and pan-fried them in a bit of canola oil.
